High school seniors Campbell McIntyre and Lawton Capps are enjoying their final year at Stratford Academy. As co-presidents of Stratford Minds Matter, they prioritize mental health and encourage their peers to do the same. Established in 2021, Stratford Minds Matter promotes self-care and overall well-being, especially when facing challenges during high school.
Campbell recently launched her own campaign, Athletes’ Minds Matter, aimed at student-athletes. When asked about her goals, Campbell expressed a desire to reach a specific audience facing unique stressors. “Student-athletes have a lot going on,” she said. “For example, I run cross country and play club and varsity soccer. That, plus my school work, is a full plate.”
The group plans to hold ongoing meetings throughout the year. Recently, award winning soccer coach Iain Jones addressed 250 students interested in learning more. As the school year continues, the hope is to have sport-specific speakers visit teams during their respective playing seasons to provide ongoing support.
Stratford teacher and Stratford Minds Matter advisor April Bacon has noticed significant interest in the program. “Campbell has worked hard to establish this campaign for student-athletes. It is great to see student buy-in.” When discussing student interest, Campbell’s greatest hope is to see the campaign flourish after her graduation. “It is an important program,” she said. “I want to see it thrive in the coming years.”
